Open letter to German Chancellor Merkel calls for end to Hambach forest clearing

Europe Beyond Coal and almost 100 organisations have signed a letter calling on German chancellor Merkel to declare a moratorium on the clearing of Hambach forest for an unneeded lignite mine, and for a fair and just coal phase out by 2030.

The letter comes as the court of Muenster ruled that coal utility RWE is not allowed to clear the Hambach forest in this logging season. The company will now have to wait until Autumn 2019 if it wants to continue destroying the forest.

What is needed now is for all further expansion of lignite coal mining in Germany to be stopped, so no more forests, villages, or communities are sacrificed for a dirty fuel Germany cannot continue to burn if it is to live up to its climate change obligations under the Paris Agreement.

5 April 2023 – While Europe needs to decarbonize electricity production by 2035 to limit warming to 1.5°C, a new report finds that banks and investors have provided billions of dollars in support to the gas power industry since 2019 [1]. The report’s authors, including Reclaim Finance and Beyond Fossil Fuels, call on financial institutions to restrict support for gas power in Europe to avoid locking-in carbon emissions on a huge scale, and increasing the level of stranded assets by 2035.

Just as we expect every last one of the 157 coal plants remaining in Europe will end up with pre-2030 closure dates in the coming years, we also expect that by 2035 our power sector will be based completely on renewable energy instead of fossils. That is what we will campaign for: going Beyond Fossil Fuels.
