French banks supporting RWE
German utility RWE is Europe’s worst polluter, and one of the biggest threats to the climate and to a fast enough coal phase out on the continent. It is destroying villages and forests to expand its giant lignite open-pit mines in Garzweiler and Hambach, North Rhine-Westphalia. While some financial actors, including French bank Crédit Agricole, have already taken a stand against RWE’s activities and ended their support for the company, BNP Paribas and Société Générale are still financing RWE’s toxic ventures.
