EU MEMBER STATE SPENDING ON RUSSIAN FOSSIL FUELS

How many millions (M) of euros from the EU has been spent on Russian coal, oil, and gas since the war on Ukraine began on 24 February?

This counter uses pricing models to predict what is paid under contracts that are not publicly disclosed. This provides a “best estimate” that is more likely to reflect the actual payments, but also likely to result in lower cost estimates than those using more simplistic calculations valuing imports at spot prices. It is more important and urgent than ever to rapidly scale up sustainable and community-friendly renewable solutions, and roll out measures to save energy and electrify our societies. This is the only way to regain control on energy prices, to ensure Europe remains on track with the Paris agreement to protect our climate, and to stop money flowing to aggressive fossil fuel regimes like Russia.

How much does each EU member state spend per year?

This is what each EU country has spent on Russian coal, oil, and fossil gas in recent years, according to UN Comtrade trade data (2019 data is shown when 2021 is not yet available. Data for 2020 is not representative due to the impact of COVID-19).

Fossil gas imports are apportioned to countries using Eurostat energy trade data.

N/A means no meaningful imports, or no data.

It is the moral duty of all Europeans to make every effort to urgently end Russian, and all fossil fuel dependence, in our economies.

Transitioning our energy systems to use less energy and be based completely on renewable energy sources is an overriding priority that will help end this terrible war in the short term, safeguard peace, and address the climate crisis that threatens our planet.
